9 Spooky films to watch this weekend

With stores advertising Halloween decorations and pumpkin-spiced lattes since the beginning of September, I’m sure you didn’t forget that the trick-or-treat holiday is this weekend. Whether or not you celebrate this candy-filled celebration, October has also been a breeding ground for some of the spookiest films of the year.

So if you’re looking to increase your excitement for Halloween, or simply looking to enjoy some holiday-themed films, grab your popcorn - or anything pumpkin spiced - and enjoy these new Halloween-themed films.

1. Addams Family 2 - October 1, 2021

After their success with the 2019 animated Addams Family reboot, the Addams Family is back for round two this month. Noticing that their children have become distant, parents Gomez and Marticia organize a road trip in hopes of bringing the family together. This family-friendly film is filled with dark humor and spooky characters with voices from stars such as Charlize Theron, Snoop Dogg, Oscar Isaac, Chloë Grace Moretz, Nick Kroll, Bette Midler, Javon Walton and Bill Hader.

2. LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales - October 1, 2021

You’ve seen the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special and LEGO Star Wars: The Quest for R2D2, but now there’s a new addition with a spooky twist. Based on events after ‘The Rise of Skywalker,” BB-8 and Poe find themselves on the planet Mustafar where they run into Darth Vader’s castle which has been renovated into an all-inclusive Sith-inspired luxury hotel. Vaneé, Vader’s loyal servant, tells BB-8, Poe and Dean (a young mechanic that they meet along the way) three scary stories linked with ancient artifacts and villains from all eras of Star Wars as they venture deeper within the castle. However, all of their venturing within the castle is linked to a sinister plan in which Dean, Poe and BB-8 must escape.

3. There’s Someone Inside Your House - October 6, 2021

Secrets are meant to be kept, but not in this movie. Based on The New York Times bestselling book of the same name by Stephanie Perkins, this film is sure to make your skin crawl. High school senior, Sydney Park, and seniors within her graduating class are being targeted by a killer who’s intent on exposing their deepest, darkest secrets. And if that wasn’t creepy enough for you, the killer wears a mask of his victims while committing his crimes.

4. Muppets Haunted Mansion - October 8, 2021

Based on Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion theme park attraction, watch as the Muppets survive a night in the ghostly house. Your favorite Muppets such as Gonzo the Great, Pepé the King Prawn, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and Fozzie Bear are featured in this special along with a plethora of stars: Taraji P. Henson, Will Arnett, Darren Criss, Yvette Nicole Brown, John Stamos and more. And if there are Muppets involved, there’s always going to be music.

5. Lamb - October 8, 2021

Lambs are cute right? Not in this film. A couple of sheep herders find a child in their barn one day and decide to care for it. The catch? The child is a mixture between human and lamb. Directed by Valdimar Jóhannsson, this Icelandic horror film is being distributed in the United States through A24, a studio with movies such as Lady Bird and Moonlight under their belt.

6. Halloween Kills - October 14, 2021

What’s October without the Michael Myers theme song? Although Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) thought she left Myers to die in her burning home, he somehow survived and continues to terrorize Haddonfield. This film stands as a sequel to the 2018 Halloween which was a direct sequel of the 1978 Halloween film. Don’t be surprised when you catch original survivors of the masked villain working together to save the day.

7. Night Teeth - October 20, 2021

What Benny thinks is an innocent night of chauffeuring party-hoppers turns bloody really quick. He finds out that the two girls are vampires and he has no choice but to ally himself with the girls for the night to stay alive. Debby Ryan, Lucy Fry and Megan Fox are just some of the stars in this bloodthirsty film.

8. Antlers - October 28, 2021

This Guillermo Del Toro-produced film may be the scariest one on the list thus far. A boy living in a small town in Oregon seems to be harboring a man-eating creature which begins to torment the area. The child’s school teacher has a hunch that the boy is somewhat connected to the monster and works with the local sheriff to unravel the truth.

9. Last Night in Soho - October 29, 2021

Eloise, an aspiring fashion designer, realizes that she is somehow able to travel back in time to the 1960s. While she has fun at first, she realizes some dark truths when she meets a singer named Sandy. Wanting to expose the truth, Eloise finds struggles along the way which creates a thrilling film. This psychological thriller carries stars such as Matt Smith and Anya Taylor-Joy.
